Introduction to Beekeeping

Phillip McCabe, President of Apimondia
This lecture was designed to be both an introduction for those considering taking up the addictive pastime of beekeeping, as well as service as a reminder to the more experienced of all the things they had forgotten. However, there was a problem with accessing Teagasc, so the lecture was moved down the road to the Crowne Plaza.

As usual Phillip had an interesting talk, interspersed with anecdotes about his experience with bees and beekeepers. One of his stories story illustrates perfectly the common bond that joins beekeepers all over the world, irrespective of the politics around them. While attending an Apimondia event, Phillip encountered one of the Palestinian beekeepers attending the event who was ordering queens from an Israeli counterpart. This goes to show how a passion for bees can transcend human conflict.

The newbees were all very taken by the variety of equipment on show, as well as the selection of honeys provided by Eoghan MacGiolla Coda. They were quite surprised at the huge variety of honey that was all from Co. Louth.
