Using the Véto-Pharma trap
This trap works very well to catch the hornets (information from Véto-Pharma):
- The yellow bowl colour is known to attract Asian hornets.
- The shape of the trap concentrates the odour of the attractant and allows a better diffusion and efficacy.
- The trap lid provides two entrances, both covered with a tunnel that focuses and directs odours, shields ambient light, and prevents hornets from escaping.
Equipment needed
- A Véto-Pharma trap
- Lure liquid in a wick pot or soaked in a sponge as described here. Note that Véto-Pharma suggest filling the bottom section with attractant but the use of a wick pot is much more efficient and does not kill bycatch.
Method
If you are using the original Véto-Pharma trap:
If you're using the VespaCatch Select trap, see Véto-Pharma's video for instructions on how to assemble and use it.
If you think you have seen an Asian Hornet, report it to Biodiversity Ireland's invasive species page. It's better to report something that turns out to be innocuous rather than miss the chance of reporting a real threat.
- Drill a series of 6mm holes to allow bycatch escape. If you only want to catch queens, the holes should be 7mm.
- Open the trap and place the wick pot on the floor.
- Close the trap lid. If necessary, secure the lid using tape.
- It's important to check the trap regularly and to release any bycatch.
