Honorary Life Members
Our Christmas party 2015 was a very enjoyable evening. Without doubt the highpoint was the presentation of honorary life membership awards to two of our beekeepers. Tom Shaw and Liam Parker have both made outstanding contributions to our association and to beekeeping in County Louth, and their awards are richly deserved.
Chairman Martin O'Rourke spoke of his admiration and respect for Tom and Liam and thanked them on behalf of all members for their hard work and dedication. Martin also paid tribute to Philip Mc Cabe who became an honorary life member in November but who was unavailable to attend on the evening due to other commitments.
Liam was heavily involved in the setting up of the first association training apiary, out on the Cooley peninsula. This apiary went on to produce many nucleus colonies for new members and it also proved to be an excellent location for the production of honey.
Tom, of course, has served as association secretary until very recently when he was appointed as secretary of the national federation (FIBKA). Both Tom and Liam are LBKA committee members again for 2016.
Thanks for Declan Monaghan for the photographs.

LBKA Beekeeper of the Year 2015
Eoghan Mac Giolla Coda has been voted our 'Beekeeper of the Year" for 2015. We feel very privileged to have Eoghan as a member, his dedication to teaching and sharing his years of experience are invaluable. Many of our beekeepers have benefited greatly from attending the lectures and practical workshops that Eoghan has delivered.
Then of course there is the small matter of winning the 24 jar class at the prestigious London Honey show - and not once, but for two years in a row. This has been compared to winning the world cup of honey shows back-to-back. Pictured is LBKA Chairman Martin O'Rourke presenting the award to Eoghan.

Irish Times article on LBKA visit to Keith Pierce's apiary.
In June 2014 we visited the apiary of Keith Pierce in Dublin. After a morning spent in the Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin we spent the afternoon in Keith's picture perfect apiary. What an afternoon it was; we captured swarms, learned how to fill apidea's and were instructed in queen rearing. Then to top it all off we had a very sociable dinner in the Angler's Rest.
Irish Times journalist Ann Marie Hourihane joined us for the day to research her article: "The Beekeeper's lot" which is well worth a read.
